Delivery Methods of Pepper Spray
There
are essentially three ways that pepper spray can be delivered--stream spray,
cone mist, and fogger spray.
Stream
sprays delivers the agent in a stream, making it more difficult to use for
most people. However, stream sprays have the advantage of
distance. They are effective at up to 15-20 feet. Because the
stream comes out of the container at a great speed, it is less likely to be
affected by wind conditions, so it should never blow back in the face of the
person that sprays it.
Cone
mists have a wider spray pattern of a fine mist. This type of spray is
very effective when sprayed directly in an attackers face. However, the
range is much shorter--6 to 8 feet, and wind conditions could blow the mist
back into the face of the person spraying it. After spraying, move out
of the way as quickly as possible.
Fogger
sprays discharge a very fine mist like a barrier into the air. This
spray is very effective, but care must be taken to avoid breathing the mist
after spraying it. This spray is the most effective, but also the most
likely to affect both the victim and the attacker.
